Hardy was most definitely a poet, and I prefer his poetry to his prose every time. Many of his poems are so made for musical setting (Britten’s Hardy songs, for example) that once you’ve heard the song, it’s almost impossible to tease the words and the music apart in future. The Oxen is one of my all time favourites; but I learned a huge amount from this essay. Thank you!

I have always loved this poem, yet it makes me sad as well, as so much of his work seems to hold this longing for the spiritual to be true yet not quite able to believe. That last line always makes me sad, his "hoping" for it to be true, yet seeming to believe it won't be.
